FAQ

What are referrals?
Referrals are applications for support. Referrals may come from the individual themselves or via another agency or statutory body e.g. NHS, local authority, drug counselling, prison service.

What is Supported Accommodation?
Supported Accommodation (hostels and shared housing) offers residents tailored one-to-one support to help them address any issues that are preventing them from moving on to independent living. We offer medium and high support accommodation with residents staying from a few weeks up to 2 years. Our supported accommodation projects are located in Ashford, Canterbury, Dover, Thanet and Tonbridge.

What is rough sleeping?
The official definition of rough sleeping from Communities and Local Government is “People sleeping, or bedded down, in the open air (such as on the streets, or in doorways, parks or bus shelters); people in buildings or other places not designed for habitation (such as barns, sheds, car parks, cars, derelict boats, stations, or “bashes”).”

What is Floating Support?
Floating Support is a homelessness prevention service. Individuals are given one-to-one support in their own homes to address issues that may cause them to lose their tenancy.

What is East & West Kent Outreach?
Our Outreach service supports people in unsuitable or temporary accommodation to access long-term housing. Often people who receive support from the Outreach service will be sofa-surfing, living in a Bed & Breakfast or living in overcrowded premises. You may see it referred to as “hidden homelessness.”

What region do these statistics cover?
We currently provide support to single homeless people in Kent.

How accurate are these statistics?
All our homelessness statistics are compiled from a bespoke database completed by the staff who are working directly with our service users. The statistics are verified by the Porchlight Senior Management Team and given final approval by our Board of Directors before being published.
