A major part of our work is to prevent people from becoming homeless in the first place. We achieve this through floating support, advice and help in addressing the issues affecting housing security. This in turn helps to empower people and increases their confidence in managing thier own lives in a positive way.

We also have a Youth Homlessness Education Programme. Through education we hope to overcome negative misconceptions, dispel the myths surrounding homelessnessand prevent the next generation from becoming homeless or in housing need.

Floating Support
Youth Homelessness Education Programme

Floating Support

We work to prevent homelessness through a floating support service, which is offered to vulnerable people living in their own accommodation. We provide one to one support to people at risk of homelessness. A floating support worker makes home visits and works with the individual to address the issues affecting their housing security.

We offer confidential support through developing an Individual Support Plan with each client based on their aims. We can help with all housing related issues, such as housing benefit, arrears, eviction and complaints; with accessing benefits and grant entitlements; accessing health care; help with budgeting; and we can advocate on someone’s behalf where appropriate.

We can provide floating support to eligible people living in East Kent for up to two years. There is also a specific service to help ex-offenders and also people with complex needs. Support is offered in a friendly and approachable manner, it is completely confidential and non-judgemental. We aim to help people change their lives so they can overcome the barriers that are preventing them from living in security and happiness.

You would benefit from the service if you:

-Have difficulty paying rent
-Worry about losing your tenancy
-Don’t understand your benefits
-Feel like you don’t have a voice
-Struggle with day to day living

Youth Homelessness Education Programme

Porchlight believes that young people can make a difference to future generations’ attitudes towards homelessness. Through education we hope to overcome negative misconceptions, dispel the myths surrounding homelessness and prevent the next generation from becoming homeless or in housing need.

By visiting secondary schools and youth clubs we aim to:

  • Prevent youth homelessness and signpost young people to available services and support.
  • Educate young people on the issues and responsibilities involved in managing a tenancy
  • Develop young people’s financial awareness and abilities to manage a tenancy
  • Change the attitudes of young people, their families and the education community towards homelessness

“Homelessness may affect any young person either directly or indirectly within their lifetime. A series of engaging and thought-provoking assemblies and workshops have helped our students to begin to understand some of the issues that easily spiral into homelessness, made even more powerful as they are delivered by people who have experienced this in their own lives but have reached the other side.”
Louise McGowan, Senior Vice Principal, The Folkestone Academy

The programme is designed to fit into relevant components of the National Curriculum and has been developed to be flexible enough to be delivered to a range of age groups.

Delivered using a set of comprehensive presentations and interactive lessons, the programme encourages maximum involvement and understanding.
