The Lord Mayor of Canterbury, Councillor Ian Thomas, recently visited one of the local accommodation projects run by homelessness charity Porchlight.

The Mayor enjoyed tea and a buffet lunch whilst asking the young residents about their future plans and giving them the opportunity to ask questions about council services.

Cllr Thomas said: “Porchlight is providing essential services in the city. The charity is helping those that fall through the gaps in society and using clever initiatives to tackle complex issues. It is a shining example of how it should be done.”

Kevin, 20, is a resident at the shared house which provides low-level support to people who are soon to move on to their own independent accommodation: “Over the year I have been with Porchlight they helped me to mature, in fact they have taught me most of what I know now. If the charity didn’t exist I think I might be on the streets, instead I am trying to get into college and study to be an electrician.”

Porchlight works across Kent and provides supported accommodation to over 100 vulnerable people in Canterbury alone as well as a service supporting the city’s rough sleepers in accessing housing. They run drop-ins on Mondays 10am-12noon at St. Peter’s Church and on Thursdays 10am-12noon at the Day Centre by Canterbury East train station.
