Sir Roger Gale, MP for North Thanet, has shown his support for the homeless by visiting an accommodation project in Ramsgate run by homelessness charity Porchlight.

Sir Roger Gale MP

Sir Roger was "...hugely impressed by the work that Porchlight do in the local area."

The hostel, situated on King Street is home to 4 people aged over 18. Staff are on-hand throughout the working week to provide residents with tailored support helping them to address issues and eventually move on to live independently.

Sir Roger spent time with staff and residents during his visit. He said:

“I found the visit an extremely useful experience and I’m hugely impressed by the work that Porchlight do in the local area. There is a very real need for the charity’s services in Thanet to support rough sleepers, people struggling to maintain a tenancy and those in unsuitable or temporary accommodation. Many people who aren’t visibly street homeless are still in desperate housing need.

“It is clear that there is also a real need to facilitate the re-entry into employment to ensure that those taking jobs are at the same time able to make the transition to affordable self-supported accommodation. There is small point in encouraging people to take jobs if they then find that they are worse off and cannot afford to live on their earned incomes.”

Spokesperson for the charity, Mark Parry commented:

“We really appreciate Sir Roger’s support. It’s important for us to keep the plight of vulnerable and homeless people fresh in the minds of local people as we rely on them to raise awareness and make donations that support these vital services.”
