"Everybody but Porchlight turned their backs on me"
18 January 2018
Our life-saving work with people who are homeless is threatened by cuts. We need your help to bring people like Daryl in from the cold.
Daryl had been homeless for six months and was feeling suicidal when he came to Porchlight. He says we saved his life.
Experiencing post traumatic stress from his job with the road traffic crash response unit, Daryl’s life spiralled out of control when his father died.
“I was all over the place, doing everything I could to block out the pain. My family and friends didn’t know what to do and things just collapsed.”
With nowhere to go and nobody to turn to, Daryl ended up homeless. He was surviving hand-to-mouth, forced to sleep in his car and later ending up on the streets when its windows were smashed.
“It was absolutely horrible. You don’t know where your next meal is coming from or what you’re going to do. You’re on your own.”
Our street team supported Daryl when no-one else would: “Everybody but Porchlight turned their backs on me.”
We found him a room in a hostel, and, with your support, Daryl is now rebuilding his life. He has even begun volunteering with us.
“I’m so thankful to Porchlight. Without them, I would be six feet under.”
