“I get so much out of volunteering”
5 June 2017
It’s national Volunteers Week and we’re celebrating some of the amazing work done by people who give up their time for us. We’ve got volunteers working in every area of our organisation. If you’d like to find out more about volunteering, get in touch.
Adam, 54, has been volunteering with our street team for the past month.
He’s been helping us support people who are sleeping rough and fits volunteering around his job as a project manager for an IT firm.
“I wanted to give something back to the community,” he explains. “I don’t have loads of spare time, but wanted to provide help to those who need it with what spare time I do have.”
Once a week, he goes out with Porchlight worker Louis. They spend a couple of hours checking in on rough sleepers, working with them to find suitable accommodation and addressing any other needs.
Adam says: “I get so much out of volunteering with Porchlight and is something I look forward to doing every week. I have been in my job for 30 years so this has been a great chance to add something new into my routine.
I’m learning a lot about homelessness and how to approach people who are sleeping rough. If you have empathy and want to do something to improve society, giving up your time like this is the best thing you can do.”
In the future, Adam will go out with other members of the Porchlight team so that he can benefit from their experience as well as Louis’.
He would also like to volunteer in other areas of the charity. Many Porchlight volunteers help in more than one area, giving them a better understanding of the work we do.
Porchlight is always looking for volunteers to help support homeless and vulnerable people. They play an important part in the work we do, whether it’s working with our street team, supporting people at risk of losing their home, or manning our homelessness helpline.
