A smarter alternative to temporary accommodation

Porchlight’s supported accommodation model, developed with Thanet District Council and now delivered with Ashford Borough Council, is helping people with an alternative to temporary accommodation and supporting them to move on for good.

The model was created in response to a clear gap in provision for people who would otherwise enter temporary accommodation. Instead of relying on short‑term, crisis‑led solutions, it provides a structured pathway into safe, stable housing, combined with intensive, strengths‑based support.

Residents are supported through tailored coaching that helps them address underlying needs, build skills and confidence, and plan for sustainable move‑on into longer‑term housing. The focus is not just on accommodation, but on long‑term stability and independence.

Results in Thanet:

  • 44 bedspaces
  • 21 people moved into social or private rented homes in one year
  • 100% tenancy sustainment at 3 months
  • significant improvements in safety, medication management, use of time and relationships

This approach shows the vital role supported accommodation can play within wider homelessness prevention strategies by bringing housing, health and support together to deliver lasting change, not short‑term fixes.

The partnership between Porchlight and Thanet District Council (TDC) is a compelling example of how collaborative working, shared ambition, and a willingness to innovate can deliver transformational outcomes for people experiencing homelessness, while also addressing systemic pressures on local services.
