Peter's Paris marathon

Why I’m taking on the Paris marathon for Porchlight

Peter is the headmaster at Kings School in Canterbury. He’s taking to the streets of France in April to run the famous Paris marathon - all to raise money for Porchlight.

Supporting a homelessness charity

The Kings school campus goes right through Canterbury and we’ve all seen how much homelessness is affecting more people, particularly young people. You can see tents all around the town. The urgency of the problem is clear.

Me and a few of the students from King’s school were lucky enough to visit a Porchlight service last year. We saw how Porchlight is helping people with skills to help in life and to help with employment. When we went a few of the students were quite struck by the health conditions of some of the people we met. It shocked them to learn that the people Porchlight were supporting had struggled to access GPs or dentists. It made us all realise how valuable Porchlight’s work is.

Why the Paris Marathon?

The race goes all throughout Paris and you see lots of the major landmarks ending up at the arc de triomphe. The atmosphere is even better than the London Marathon because there is lots of music and bands. It really helps spur you on during the run.

Being headmaster of kings I have a lot on my plate so fitting in practice runs and diets can be hard. You’ve really got to be motivated to keep up with the training and to get around the course but knowing the difference all the money raised will make is what keeps me going.

Whatever your challenge is for sponsorship, it’s not as challenging as sleeping rough. That’s why I think everyone should do something to help Porchlight.
