Bluewater helping homeless people get into work

Their situation can count against them when going for a job

Many people we support want to work but find that the stigma of homelessness is a barrier to gaining employment.

Bluewater and its co-owner Land Securities are helping us to change this. Both companies will put £5,000 towards our award-winning ‘Workwise’ employment training scheme for the second year running.

Over the year, the scheme will allow many Porchlight residents to undertake a week-long training course from The Learning Shop, a training and recruitment specialist based at Bluewater.

They’ll have the chance to train in areas including retail, customer service or construction, as well as improving CVs and covering letters.

The difference it's making

Last year’s successful partnership led to nine Porchlight residents gaining employment.

“We’re very excited that Bluewater and Land Securities will be continuing their support,” explains Porchlight’s Kate Boulding.

“Working together will create so many opportunities for the people we help to find fulfilling work that they enjoy, allowing them to put their past behind them and regain their independence.”

How we get people into work

The vast majority of people we support want to find work, but a lack of recent work experience or relevant skills can be a real barrier to doing so. Last year, Porchlight helped 333 people into education, training and employment.

Bluewater staff will be also be taking time to raise money for our life-saving services, and also raising more awareness of Kent’s ongoing homelessness crisis and how charities like Porchlight can help.
