Collaboration will make homelessness funding go further

Working together enables us to help more people

Five Kent councils have been awarded share of £34 million extra funding to help people who are homeless.

It’s part of the government’s £100 million strategy to end rough sleeping by 2027. We previously said it was a step forward but more needs to be done.

This extra new funding is to be welcomed, but money alone won’t solve the homelessness crisis.

In our experience, councils are committed to tackling homelessness with the resources available and we’re keen to work closely with them to do this.

Working together

However, homelessness is complicated and solving it is about more than just providing a roof.

For this funding to really make a difference, it’s important that local councils, homelessness charities, and substance misuse and mental health services work closely together.

The government’s austerity measures are stretching all of our services to breaking point so it’s important that we pool the resources we’ve got.

Combining our skills

By combining our local knowledge and expertise, we’ll be able to help more people who are on the streets or at risk of becoming homeless.

Ultimately, there are dangerously high levels of homelessness across the whole country. The only way we’re going to see an end to the crisis is through continued investment from the government and the political will to address the drastic loss of social housing, both here in Kent and across the UK.
