We need a compassionate approach to helping homeless migrants

We're backing new proposals to support them

Homeless migrants face fear, hostility and are easy targets for criminal gangs. They need our help.

This is why we’re backing new proposals to address the challenges they face. These proposals come from Homeless Link and the No Accommodation Network (who we’ve previously worked with to make politicians aware of the challenges homeless migrants face). They're calling on the government to:

  • recognise and address the impact that restrictions on public funds have on homelessness
  • stop the flow of homelessness from the asylum system
  • expand access to free immigration and welfare advice
  • take a cross-departmental approach to tackling all forms of rough sleeping and homelessness
  • repeal the Illegal Migration Act 2023 as soon as possible.

Previous government policy on immigration has made it more difficult for non-British people to access support services, find work or claim benefits - regardless of their status in the UK or reason for being here. Criminalising them for sleeping on the streets cuts them off from the support they desperately need to escape homelessness. It can even push them into modern slavery.

It’s time to fix this.

We believe that help should be provided to everyone who needs it, regardless of where they were born. It's why we regularly work with partner charities that support non-UK residents. And we'll continue to fight for a future where everyone gets the help they need.
